How to play 3gp files?

Please read our 3GP player section.

You need a special software in order to play 3gp file format. Microsoft Windows Media Player just can’t play the 3gp files.

If you’re using a PC on Windows, you might need to download Apple Quicktime. Don’t worry, for a basic features, it’s free.

If you’re using a cellphone, by default there’s an application installed inside. For Nokia, you can use Nokia Multimedia Player

If you’re using PDA, there’s a lot of application.

What is 3gp stands for?

From Wikipedia: 3gp is a file format which is used in mobile phones to store media (audio/video). This file format is a simpler version of “ISO 14496-1 Media Format”. MOV (used by QuickTime) is also a format which follows similar file format. This format can only carry video encoded as MPEG-4 or H.263. Audio is stored in AMR-NB or AAC-LC formats.

How to convert 3gp file to avi?

Convert 3gp to avi with QuickTime Alternative and Zwei-Stein Converter

Download freeware Zwei-Stein Converter.
Next, download and install free 3gp codecs intended for converting files: Quicktime Alternative.

1) Launch Zwei-Stein (Click Start -> Programs -> Thugs at Bay…)
2) Press File -> Import -> Import Video Clip
3) Select type of files - “All files (*.*)”
4) Open your .3gp video clip.
5) Press File -> Export -> Video for Windows (AVI)
6) Enter filename.
7) Choose video codec. DivX, XviD or WMV9 are recommended.
Click OK! That’s all.

NOTE: You can change several parameters before conversion
- Video Dimensions (menu Destination -> Video Format)
- Video Frequency (menu Destination -> Frames Per Second)
- Effects (menu Source -> Add Video Effect)

Convert 3gp to avi with 3gpToRawAvi converter

Download the 3gpToRawAvi converter from here:

Unzip 3gpToRawAvi.zip and move folder ‘3gpToRawAvi’ to, for instance, C:\3gpToRawAvi.
Move a .3gp movie file you want to convert to the same folder (C:\3gpToRawAvi).
Then go to the command window:
1. Click on the Start button
2. Click on Run
3. Type in “cmd” and click OK to display the dos window
4. If you’re not in C:\> go to C:\> by typing “c:” followed by Enter
5. In C:\> go to C:\3gpToRawAvi> by typing “cd 3gpToRawAvi” followed by Enter
6. In C:\3gpToRawAvi> type “3gptorawavi -o ” followed by Enter
Note: Replace with the .3gp file name without the .3pg extension and with the .avi file name of your choice. Eg. “3gptorawavi Video1 -o Video2″
7. The new raw avi file will be placed in the same folder.

Note: A bit of experimentation shows that, on XP anyway, 3gpToRawAvi won’t work if it’s folder, or any of it’s parent folders have a space in the name. For instance if 3gpToRawAvi is in “D:\documents and settings\” or in any folder within “D:\documents and settings\” then you’ll get an error when you try to run it.

The most easy way: download Nokia Multimedia Player with 3GP support.

This is normal video player for PC platform (Windows OS), but it has several additional functions (conversion to 3gp format).

1) Download and install player.
2) Launch Nokia Multimedia Player. Open your video file (avi or mpg).
3) Press File -> Save as…
4) Enter filename of your 3gp file, and choose resolution and size limit:
MMS 64KB, 128*96

As for me, i’ll use Xilisoft 3gp converter. But it’s not free. You must get the license code in order to use it. It’s priced at $29.

What about Sony Play Station Portable (PSP)? Can I convert it so that I can view it on my PSP handheld?
