Eagle Broadband Inc., a provider of broadband, IP and communications technology and services, has launched the SatMAX Alpha Emergency Communications System (Alpha ECS), a portable, Iridium-based satellite phone emergency communications system designed for disaster recovery, crisis management and emergency preparedness.

The Enhanced Mobile Satellite Service (EMSS) Iridium Handset Series 9505 satellite telephone is a lightweight, handheld Future Narrow Band Digital Terminal (FNBDT) compatible device designed to provide users worldwide secure voice connectivity in mobile environments as well as secure voice connectivity to desktop STU-IIIs and compatible equipment (e.g. Secure Terminal Equipment (STEs)).

Iridium Satellite is planning to supply mobile satellite phone systems for an intrepid group of amateur “ham” radio operators who are undertaking a DXpedition which is to establish up nine temporary radio stations near Antarctica. The radio site will be operational on Peter I Island for approximately two weeks in February.
