Funny Face Drink Mix – banned commercial

ToonORama posted a nice video:

Here’s a commercial that didn’t last long on the airwaves. In the early 1960s, Pillsbury decided to compete with Kool-Aid and came out with their own line of instant drink mixes. These “pre-sweetened” mixes contained cyclamates instead of sugar (”so you don’t mess up the kitchen adding sugar”) and each flavor was assigned a cartoon character: Goofy Grape, Freckle Face Strawberry, Loud-Mouth Lime, and Rootin’ Tootin’ Raspberry. However, two of these characters met with widespread disapproval …

Shouldn’t it be Lesbian Lake Trout?

  2. cincyblows Says:

In the interest of political correctness, I propose a new flavor called Lesbian Lime.

  3. Tazzman Says:

I remember they took FFD off the market for awhile and then brought back and then removed it again and Pillsbury sold it to another company that changed the images and added new flavors and the taste was not as good so I stopped drinking it!

I had a plastic Funny Face mug, too…wasn’t there a watermelon flavor, too? Something like “Wild Out Watermelon”?

Anyone else notice this,we all wore striped shirts in the 1960’s. I did too!

  7. caesarcerf Says:

This commercial was protested by left wing radicals because of the Lefty LemonLime character.

Goofy grape was my favorite, but I loved them all!!! I also liked Kool-aid, but that’s still around.

I only wish this drink was still around. It was also good to know that three of the character’s names got makeovers. I wasn’t too fond of Chinese Cherry; I’m glad he was renamed to Choo Choo Cherry. The same with Injun Orange; he was renamed to Jolly Olly Orange. And Loudmouth Lime became Lefty LemonLime.

  12. Jaquebaul Says:

Injun orange and Chinese cherry are questionable, but i’m more offended by that white kid who can barely read.

i’m with u. it is just harmless fun.

We loved Funny Face! I remember we even had a set of plastic mugs shaped like the characters….I think you sent in empty envelopes to get them as a prize. It was ridiculous when they did away with cyclamates….based on studies that it caused cancer in rats, at levels like drinking hundreds of servings a day or something stupid like that.

I don’t see how this is racist.

It’s just poking fun at the things that make us all individual and interesting.

I loved this stuff! Seeing this commercial reminds me of the hot summers in San Fernando Valley as a kid. I liked all the flavors except the strawberry.

Pre-sweetened without sugar…hmm. Sodium Cylamate, probably. That stuff was sweet as sugar but they banned it, they should bring it back because they found it’s not a cancer causing additive like they thought.
