Possible Cover-up in China Milk Scandal
More babies are getting sick from tainted Chinese milk power. And as the confirmed number of sick continues to rise, some details of the scandal suggest that communist officials may have known about the tainted milk over a month before they notified the public. Here’s more:
STORY:
Chinese officials have said that roughly 53,000 children have been affected by drinking tainted baby formula. Over 100 are said to be in critical condition and to date there have been four confirmed deaths.
The poisonous powdered milk was produced by Sanlu Group, one of China’s largest dairy distributors. The formula was made toxic by the addition of melamine, a substance used in various plastics and flame retardant materials. Ingestion of melamine has been shown to cause the formation of kidney stones and, in some cases, acute kidney failure.

“It’s much scarier with young infants because their urinary tracts are very narrow, so they are easily blocked, and once they are blocked that leads to acute kidney failure.”
The Associated Press reports that Sanlu Group had notified some of its distributors as early as July that some of its milk was tainted and should be pulled from the shelves. There is evidence suggesting that Chinese officials were informed at about the same time. But the contamination was not made public until September 11—over a month later— and that raises questions of negligence and possibly a cover-up.
According to AP, there are retailers with warehouses full of tainted Sanlu milk who have been unable to get refunds from the company.
So far only a small handful of countries–including Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Malaysia–have barred dairy imports from China, but that may change.
With lead in toys, toxic cough syrup, melamine-laced pet food and now melamine-tainted milk powder, questions about China’s ability to regulate the safety of its exports loom large.

I agree. Our US goverment is corrupted. They tried 2 hade the fact the we have tainted milk products over here 2. Most of them in candies that where sold 4 halloween from china. Every other country took them off there store shelves but we didn’t because of the elections. But now that Obama is president I think that all well change. Along with china corrupt goverment. I actually feel sorry 4 the chinese citizen cause they really can’t speak out about there corrupt goverment.

Actually, it’s not really a double standard to criticize China if you are critical of your own government (most of these people are probably that way). In less than a week we can see how many disagree with current US policy.
That said, I agree that something is fundamentally wrong with regulation in China and the fact that this happens stuff repeatedly is proof of that.

I apologize for my bigoted remark. I study cultures and I was generalizing. Don’t get me wrong, we have corruption here in the US also. Let’s face the fact that China has put melamine is wheat gluten, rice, milk and egg products, baking powder and I could go on and on. This was not limited to a couple of guys in one company as the Chinese government claimed when our pets were killed in the U.S. How is this so widespread in China? Especially after you knew the death it was causing in pets!

I am 100% American and I agree with what you say here, however, China can be generalized as being quite corrupt and dishonest. In general they have no conscious. When they are caught they only feel badly about being caught, not about what they did. It’s true that there are Americans like that too, but in general most Americans do care about the world. Yes, there is corruption in the U.S. based on money. In fact our government is controlled by big business. Sad. China crossed the line.
