means you can put any sim card in you want i:e o2,vodafone,orange,t mobile,whichever mobile phone operator you want to go with,put your old sim in and itl work no bother,whereas if it was locked to a specific operator it will only work with that operator example if it was locked to vodafone you cant put a o2 sim in the phone because it wont work.

no contract only but you can buy them on ebay,unlocked,i just got the inca gold ltd edition one,but in saying that i think it looks better in black.
