IKEA – Banned Commercial – Swedish Midsummer
You might have heard of the Swedish midsummer tradition, the day when everybody in Sweden gets drunk and dance around a Maypole. Anyway, last year IKEA Germany produced commercials where they made fun of the swedes and their Midsummer tradition. The commercials got banned by the head office at IKEA Sweden (IKEA is a Swedish company).

Close to reality? Well, you are not a swedish person and you have no right telling me or some other swede how we celebrate midsummer. This is obviously not real. And everyone that live in sweden knows this. You, as a german can’t come here and say you “know” this is how it is. It’s the same as if i said that germans go celebrate christmas taking a bath in a frozen swamp.

I promise.
This film is as close to reality as any one can get. It’s probably a documentary.
Of course, not all swedes are like this. But according to statistics on the increasing average alcohol intake amongst the swedes (espescially amongst young women the last few yers) it is vast majority who behaves just like this on midsumnmer.
I’ve seen it too often to be surprised.
Every german who’s been to a swedish midsummer celebration know it’s true.

I get drunk, dance and have a bit of a laugh on most of the midsumer evenings, if not all of them, that doesn’t mean I’m not civilized, it just means I like to party and to get a break from some of the rules and standards of the modern society.
Since the Midsumer celebrations are from our heathen time, then what suits better than to act like a savage viking?!:P Plus how civilized is the german Oktoberfest (or Wiesn)?! Huuuh?!
Prost/Skål(old version: gutår)/Cheers/Kippis!

Whatever people from other countries read or see about Swedish traditions this is NOT how it happen. It’s just like Christmas only in the summer without presents. Swedes are not dumb people who only want på be drunk and dance like pigs around a pole. We are as civilized as anyone.

This is exactly what happends in sweden at midsummer. Very good depiction of the actual ritual and the various events around it. This commercial was banned because of it’s length and couldn’t fit into the GCP (German Commercial Program). IKEA Germany refused too shorten the commercial, therefore it was never aired.
