Yes, these companies want to beat Microsoft and Symbian.
Six mobile phone industry giants announced their goal to create a new Linux-based software platform for mobile devices in order to challenge Symbian and Microsoft’s Windows.
Motorola, NEC, Panasonic Mobile Communications, and Samsung Electronics, have joined together with mobile phone service providers NTT DoCoMo and Vodafone to develop the unnamed mobile Linux enterprise.
The six device manufacturering companies said they intend to create a single mobile phone software platform based on the Linux kernel that will reduce time to market as well as development and testing costs.
