World of wireless takes flight almost everywhere but in air
Recent improvements to wireless access in hotels, on trains, in airports and on cruise ships mean business travellers and event planners can think outside the boardroom.
Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has been quick to implement new technology. All of Fairmont’s 44 hotels and resorts offer high-speed connectivity in the guest rooms and Wi-Fi wireless access in public areas and meeting rooms.
“About four years ago, we identified that our challenge was to upgrade our classic hotels, such as the Banff Springs and Chateau Lake Louise, by implementing the best high-speed solution possible for our guests,” says Vineet Gupta, vice-president of technology at Fairmont Hotels & Resorts.
“It has been very successful. With one million users in 2005 (usage doubled in each of the last couple of years), the system upgrade paid for itself in two years.”
Gupta says Fairmont’s network is secure and reliable because they don’t use a third-party provider, and the bandwidth is high to ensure a large volume of users.
Other services for guests include their own fully routable IP (Internet Protocol) address, a destination portal providing instant access to email and VPN (Virtual Private Networks). VPNs extend geographic connectivity by using a public network, such as the Internet, to connect remote sites or a company network, ensuring guests and/or convention attendees stay connected to their offices.
