Satellite voice and data services provider Globalstar today said it is launching a special promotion for customers in Alaska – giving business and residential a 50 percent discount off access charges if they subscribe before July 15 – as the company prepares to open its new gateway satellite ground station in Wasilla this summer.

Although the Milpitas, Calif.-based company has offered satellite coverage in the state and the general region since 2000, it claims the new gateway ground station will provide enhanced Globalstar coverage and connections to public telephone networks to areas throughout Alaska, Northwestern British Columbia and the Bering Sea islands. The addition of service from Wasilla will improve coverage along Northern Pacific fishing grounds such as Dutch Harbor.
