Iridium Satellite is planning to supply mobile satellite phone systems for an intrepid group of amateur “ham” radio operators who are undertaking a DXpedition which is to establish up nine temporary radio stations near Antarctica. The radio site will be operational on Peter I Island for approximately two weeks in February.

During that time, ham radio operators all over the world will have an opportunity to log calls to the station. Also, through the Iridium satellite network El Al Airlines will introduce a new in-flight calling-card telephone service that will provide worldwide telephone connections. El Al will offer the calling service for passengers in all classes on its fleet of Boeing 767 long-haul passenger jets, and expects to complete the installations on all of the 767s early in 2006.

My thought:

This is cool. I hope someday, we will have no barrier to call anybody from anywhere. This will beat the conventional phone operator.

When will it happen? Next 10 years? I don’t know. We’ll wait and see.
